Match report by Nick Preedy (Class of 2005):

This year’s Grafton Morrish qualifying round took place on Sunday 12 May at Gog Magog Golf Club in Cambridge. A superb result was achieved by the Loughburians team. Team A, Dave and Phil Saul both had a solid round shooting 76 gross for 31 points. Team B, George Griffiths and Nick Preedy had a brilliant round, shooting level par 71 for 36 points, which went on to win the best individual pair score of the day, and Team C, James Pretty and Ian Anderson who fizzled out towards the last few holes, shooting 80 for 27 points.

Our total of 94 points is, apparently, one of the best team scores seen in the East Midlands. The Loughburians won the overall day and pushed Oakham out as we played last, which was even better news! So with team, and individual winners, in this year’s qualifying we couldn’t ask for more than that.

The finals will take place over the weekend of 4th-6th October in North Norfolk, playing Hunstanton and Royal West Norfolk (Brancaster). The squad of Dave Saul, Phil Saul, James Pretty, George Griffiths, Harry Telfer Smith, Scott Hamilton, Joe Halfpenny, Zach Sananes and Nick Preedy are all aiming to be available so the Loughburians can take a squad of 7-8 players, to rotate daily form for the 6 man team event each day.
