Having read for a BSc Geology & Geography and an MSc Geophysics, my subjects at the school are Geography and Physics which I teach at all levels throughout the school. I am also a Fellow of the Geological Society, which I use to promote contemporary topics and learning into my lessons.
"The boys really do ‘buy into’ your approach if you show them you care about your discipline and, also, about them."
I studied at Imperial College London and at the end of the course I went to work for a year in the City of London as a commodities analyst, which provided some ‘real world’ experience. I am pleased to have a different experience to complement my teaching. I then completed my PGCE teaching course at the University of Nottingham and then joined the teaching staff at Loughborough Grammar School.
Teachers should be able to instil genuine enthusiasm in their pupils and this only comes from a personal passion and aptitude in the subjects they are tutoring. The boys really do ‘buy into’ your approach if you show them you care about your discipline and, also, about them. What makes teaching at Loughborough Grammar School enjoyable is there is a common goal on behalf of pupils and staff of wanting to achieve highly and strive towards academic excellence. I value my ability to attach and connect all areas of my life and the subject to one another, to create a network of links for pupils to connect. This only comes with excellent subject knowledge. Pupils respect subject knowledge and once you add your vigour, pupils find it easy to see the full academic picture.

Co-curricular activities outside of lessons are a valuable component of the education offered at Loughborough Grammar School, with a wide variety of sports that are a pleasure to be involved in, even as a member of academic staff. I have played cricket from a young age, and am a Level 2 ECB Cricket Coach, so am involved in team cricket where I take the Year 8 squad setup. During the winter, my role as Master i/c Football means I coach and manage the school’s senior 1st XI, and associated administration, down to Year 10. It is important for the pupils to see you in a different environment to your taught subject. You also have the chance to strengthen links with pupils and get to understand them better.
Loughborough Grammar School itself has a very relaxed atmosphere with staff who make the extra effort to enhance pupil experiences at the school. Academic staff do have the freedom and independence to explore whichever academic avenues they feel are beneficial. Not being shackled promotes organic learning at Loughborough Grammar School, which helps develop a rounded education.
In my third academic year at Loughborough Grammar School, my most abiding memory so far was my interview for the job at the school. The day started with a tour of the school, which was mainly spent on the cricket square, then I was really happy with my lesson, and finally the delicious cornflake cake for dessert really made up my mind!
