A Level

In order to access this qualification you should have attained a grade A or above in GCSE Latin.

Latin enables you to acquire an understanding of the culture, politics and social life of Rome at a significant period of its history. You will study prose and verse texts, building on the knowledge and skills gained at GCSE. In language work the emphasis is on increasing competence in translation and comprehension and you will develop your skills of translating from English into Latin.

In addition to developing your linguistic facility, you will also develop your skills of analysis and evaluation, literary criticism and the ability to formulate a logical and convincing argument.

THE A LEVEL COMPRISES FOUR PAPERS:

  • Unseen translation (33%)
  • Prose composition or comprehension (17%)
  • Prose literature (25%)
  • Verse literature (25%)
