This year’s theme for British Science Week is ‘Growth.’ To mark the occasion, the Science department have been running several special activities with different age groups.

As part of a topic on brain growth, Year 6 enjoyed looking at Ames Windows and other optical illusions, as well as making some marshmallow and spaghetti towers.

Year 12 Biologists have been looking at their cheek cells under the microscope and comparing the images seen using optical and electron microscopes. They have also been extracting DNA from leeks!

LSF Biology Academic Journal Club

Mr Vastenavondt has set up an LSF Biology Academic Journal Club which has now run for five weeks. The club members explore scientific journal articles from high impact publications (e.g., Science; New England Journal of Medicine; British Medical Journal; The Lancet) to find the latest biomedical research and then work together to unpick the science, research methodology and data/results. Each student takes the lead each week to present an article. This is a great new initiative for medicine and veterinary science applicants and any aspirants to Oxbridge.
