The standards of behaviour and effort expected are high but attainable as children continue to grow and develop.
The learning in Year 3 and 4 continues to be topic based to provide the rich and deep experiences that make learning meaningful studying topics such as the Victorians, Romans and The Arctic. Children are introduced to the Accelerated Reader programme, designed to develop comprehension and inference skills. We challenge all children to become a reading millionaire and by regular tracking of their progress we can celebrate how many words they have read. At this age, we also introduce Knowledge Organisers per topic. Knowledge Organisers run across the School and provide learners with key facts, vocabulary and theory that they need to know in order to be successful.
By Year 4, we would expect all children to have a solid grasp of their multiplication tables, as well as reading regularly for the equivalent of at least 20 minutes per night to ensure reading growth. As in other year groups, for those who have found the acquisition of key skills more difficult, support is put in place, in discussion with parents, to ensure that continued progress is evident for all.
Music plays a big role in Year 3 and 4. As well as weekly Congers sessions and their Music lesson, children also receive a weekly singing session allowing them to prepare for performances across the year. Many children who enjoyed their string lessons decide to continue this through private tuition or try a different instrument and they are collected for their lessons at Loughborough Schools Music and then returned safely back to Amherst.
The students in Year 3 and 4 continue to benefit from whole School visits to support learning such as visits to Warwick Castle or Pickford House Museum. They are also old enough to stay over in the annual School based sleepover as well as being invited to join the annual residential visit which lasts 3 days and alternates between outdoor and adventurous activities such as canoeing and abseiling at Beaumanor Hall and a traditional seaside visit to Sheringham.
Our overriding focus in Year 3 and 4 is that your child continues to be happy. We help them to flourish and support them in beginning to understand the impact they can have upon their own success.
