Richard West

Deputy Head, Academic

I joined the Loughborough Schools Foundation as Director of Music in September 2013 and became Deputy Head Academic at Amherst in January 2021.

As a boy, I was a chorister at St Albans and this was the spark that ignited my passion for music. I went on to study at Durham and Copenhagen Universities, before undertaking my teacher training at Cambridge. I then taught in Bishops Stortford and at the Haberdashers' Aske's Boys' School in Elstree, before becoming Director of Music and Head of Creative Arts at Christ College, Brecon. I completed a Masters in Music Composition for Media through Hertfordshire University before coming to Loughborough and my Masters in Educational Leadership through Buckingham University in 2019.

My family and I live on campus in Glengairn House, where my wife Marie is Boarding Housemistress. I love to cook, though the temptation of boarders' tea means that my culinary experiments are now largely limited to the school holidays. When it comes to sport, I enjoy skiing in the winter and croquet in the summer. At both, I am best described as an enthusiastic amateur.
